SUMS Remix, and SUMS before it, were an integral part of my work life from the fall of 2012 through the spring of 2021. The idea of a creating a book summary product as a solution to a common leadership problem was one of my three primary tasks when I joined Auxano earlier that year.
The original SUMS product was a true excerpt of a single book, with Go Ahead Actions, published from the fall of 2012-2014. In 2015, SUMS Remix was launched, with the same format as above, but drawing from three books instead of one.
The SUMS and SUMS Remix production cycle ended in April 2021, after a run of 8 1/2 years, with 227 issues, referencing 574 books.
Because of the evergreen nature of most of the topics, SUMS and SUMS Remix continue to live on in various uses, updated as needed. One of those uses is below – multiple issues devoted to the concepts of First Place Hospitality.
Listed below you will find links to the 11 issues with a focus on First Place Hospitality:
- Does your church realize that Jesus really meant that they should love their actual neighbors? Do you?
- How can I lead our church to leverage the everyday moments of their life to share the gospel?
- How is pastoring my cul-de-sac more significant that pastoring my church?
- How can we lead a life of hospitality that draws us into the lives of others in tangible ways?
- How can I help my church see biblical hospitality – specifically the “table” – as a way of life?
- How can I learn to see God’s work in my neighborhood?
- How can I lead my church to build community outside the walls of our building?
- How can I lead a church that knows, and loves, their neighbors?
- How can our members use their “table” as a bridge to their neighbors?
- How can I help my church learn to see that their mission field starts across the street or down the hall?
- In this busy, fragmented world, how can we learn to pay attention to wherever God has place us?
The next document is not a SUMS Remix, but a TeamUP, designed for high-level thinking and ground-level application. Bringing Hospitality Home – Helping People Be the Church Every Day was created during the height of the Covid-19 pandemic to help churches empower their members to use their homes for missional impact.
Finally, as a follow-up to Bringing Hospitality Home, I created a set of additional tools to further explore the seven topics covered. Called TeamUP+, you can access them here when they become available:
- Understand God’s Welcome to Us
- Hospitality Points Others to Jesus
- Stop, Look, and Listen
- Be Aware
- Be Intentional
- Practice the Three Actions of the Good Samaritan
- Set the Tables
